Every book you see in the Blinkist library was read and blinked by real people. We read and extract the most important insights from each book. We strive to present the key points from the book in a logical, sticky and compelling way, while simultaneously peppering them with surprising and memorable facts and examples that keep our users engaged and inspired.
We got our start as a self-organized company by using a method/system called Holacracy. The system helped us grow as an organization and led us to identify key elements that were really important to us. We also use specific language to talk about certain aspects of our organization such as departments. The organization is compromised in circles. There are 5 circles that are nested within the Global Company Circle (GCC). The GCC is nested within the biggest circle that represents our board. The organization and the circles all have purposes to ultimately help the entire company to reach it's purpose of building the leading destination for the modern lifelong learner.
We have, over the last few years, moved away from Holacracy and now use what we call the Blinkist Operating System (BOS). This freed us from many of the more complex aspects of Holacracy and a more rigid structure, and gave us a clear framework within which we can work effectively as a self-organized company, with a lot of freedom.
Being self–organized means that, while we still have a set structure within the organization, many decisions are left up to the individual to ensure that everyone can do their best work. Every person at Blinkist has the power to make decisions within their domain. We strived to create the BOS as a means to offer clear boundaries and plenty of ways to work within them. The BOS outlines how we work together through a set framework of values, guiding principles and processes.
Some of the most important core aspects of the BOS are self–organization, distributed authority, transparency and personal development. Overall, we focus on these core themes to continue to improve and stress what is most important to the organization. We constantly work to help circles and individuals build the “muscles” necessary to work successfully within the BOS.
